I think the important thing about religious celebrations is not to forget the importance of the tradition, that said I think the second most important thing is to have FUN!
One of my most memorable bar mitzvahs was at a home in the country with a tent large enough to seat 200 people. Rather then actually use the tenting i just used the tent frame and covered it with twigs and vines creating a “sukkot” for guests to sit under. All the tables were covered with custom made burlap floor length linens and then covered with oversized white French hemstitched linen overlays. The tables were then topped with masses of candles and large handmade wooden bowls filed with figs, beautiful orchard apples, bosc pears, persimmons, and a host of dried fruit and nuts. The entrance hosted a walkway of iron lanterns and throughout the “sukkot” hung a collection of antique and iron lanterns. It was BREATHTAKING!
Then there was the time I did a bas mitzvah in a Broadway theatre……
